Africa’s pharmaceutical sector continues to evolve, with local manufacturing gradually expanding but still falling short of meeting demand. The continent remains heavily import-dependent, with domestic production currently addressing only around 30% of total pharmaceutical needs. Despite this, there is growing interest and momentum toward building a more self-reliant manufacturing base, driven by rising demand, policy shifts, and increased health awareness.
In a recent project for a global healthcare client, africon analyzed Africa’s pharmaceutical manufacturing landscape to identify opportunities for investment and partnership. We found that over 400 pharmaceutical manufacturers are active across the continent, but true production scale remains concentrated. Only four countries—Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, and Algeria—host significant manufacturing activity, accounting for the bulk of Africa’s pharmaceutical output. While local production is primarily focused on generic drugs, capabilities in R&D and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing remain limited. However, with increasing investment in infrastructure and local capacity, the sector is poised for strong growth in the coming years. Major global players such as Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Sanofi are already present in African markets, demonstrating confidence in the continent’s long-term potential.
By delivering country-level insights and mapping key players across the value chain, africon provided the client with a clear understanding of the market structure, challenges, and growth opportunities. These insights enabled the client to refine their Africa strategy and explore targeted approaches for expansion and engagement.
