Power supply challenges remain a concern across many African countries, driving consistent demand for alternative energy solutions such as diesel-electric generator sets. Power outages, growing industrialization, and infrastructure expansion continue to fuel the import and usage of generators in sectors ranging from manufacturing and mining to healthcare and telecommunications.
In a recent project for a global energy solutions provider, africon conducted an in-depth analysis of generator demand across Africa. We also did 20+ expert interviews and engaged with local experts, distributors and stakeholders in the market. Our extensive research identified South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria as the continent’s top three importers of diesel generator sets. However, import trends are shifting. While countries like Egypt, Nigeria, and Algeria have seen a decline in diesel generator imports between 2021 and 2023, others, such as South Africa, Tanzania, and Morocco, are experiencing an increase, making them increasingly attractive for international suppliers and manufacturers.
