Slide of the month (SOTM) April: Africa’s top 3 countries for international airports are all in North Africa

International airports play a central role in Africa’s economic connectivity, linking local markets to global trade, investment, and mobility flows. At africon, airport infrastructure frequently comes up in client discussions.

In a recent project for a large construction company, we analysed airport infrastructure across Africa and mapped the number of international airports by country. One clear pattern emerged: North Africa hosts the top 3 countries when it comes to the number of international airports. Algeria (13), Morocco (12), and Tunisia (7) have the largest number of international airports in Africa.

North Africa’s strong airport presence is due several structural factors:

  • Close proximity to Europe enables frequent, short-haul international flights.
  • Developed aviation infrastructure allows multiple airports to operate internationally.
  • Long‑established aviation networks, developed around tourism, trade, and government travel
  • Highly urbanised population centres, spread across multiple cities.

For africon’s clients, airport infrastructure serves as a practical indicator of market accessibility and operational ease. In this project, we translated these insights into strategic recommendations to support market prioritisation and operational planning.
