The pharmaceutical manufacturing landscape in Africa is still nascent but presents opportunities for foreign companies.
For one of our clients, we conducted a thorough examination of the sector, focusing on critical aspects such as local production, market dynamics, and industry players.
Pharmaceutical production remains largely import-dependent in Africa. Only four countries on the continent host more than 50 active pharmaceutical manufacturers, indicating a concentrated landscape and highlighting areas for potential expansion and investment. Our findings revealed that production focuses on generic products, representing approximately 70% of total local production value. Companies focus on the downstream processes of the value chain, such as manufacturing and packaging, and have limited research and development and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) production capacities on the continent.
Approximately 60% of pharmaceutical companies are local firms, mostly with limited manufacturing output, while ~25% are multinationals and ~ 15% are African conglomerates.
