Slide of the month (SOTM) September. Top African countries for EU automotive exports

Africa’s automotive import market has seen steady growth over the last decade, fuelled by infrastructure development and rising consumer demand. Despite global disruptions and logistical challenges, the continent continues to attract strong trade flows from international suppliers. Imports of vehicles and parts remain key drivers of Africa’s trade volumes.

At africon, we work with many large automotive clients each year, and one recurring question is: Which are the most attractive export markets for EU automotive companies? To answer this in a large recent project, we analysed trade data from 2019 to 2023, combining UN Comtrade data, customs databases, and proprietary trade monitoring tools, complemented by expert interviews with distributors and importers.

South Africa is Africa’s largest market for EU automotive parts imports. Morocco stands out as having high import growth and high market share. It is driven by strong industrial integration with Europe and significant investments in local vehicle manufacturing. Tanzania, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire are the “stars of tomorrow” and although their current market sizes remain smaller, both countries have posted some of the fastest import growth rates in recent years.

These insights help africon’s clients benchmark performance, identify opportunities, and adjust strategies in a shifting competitive landscape. Africa’s import market continues to evolve, offering opportunities for suppliers who combine quality, local partnerships, and cost efficiency.
