Slide of the month (SOTM) July: How China is reshaping Africa’s construction equipment market

minutes to read

Africa’s construction and mining equipment market is changing fast, and the competitive landscape looks very different from just a few years ago. In a recent engagement, africon supported a global construction and mining equipment manufacturer in making sense of that shift, with a particular focus on the rapid rise of Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The study spanned five regions, namely West, Central, North, East and Southern Africa, where infrastructure expansion, mining activity and sustained public investment continue to drive demand for heavy machinery.

The work set out to answer a few pointed questions. How quickly have Chinese OEMs expanded across the continent, and where do they now hold the strongest positions? To answer them, africon applied a data-driven, triangulated approach, combining a detailed analysis of import data with regional breakdowns and validation through africon’s on-the-ground market expertise across Africa.

The findings point to a clear and accelerating shift. China’s market share in Africa increased significantly from 2020 to 2024, by +26% in West, +30% in Central, +27% in North, +19% in East, and +8% in Southern Africa. By 2024, that left Chinese manufacturers supplying roughly 60% of construction and mining equipment in West Africa, about 65% in Central Africa and 56% in East Africa. North Africa climbed to around 45%, while Southern Africa, long a stronghold for premium brands, moved past 30%. This expansion is underpinned by competitive pricing, flexible financing models and an increasingly localised market approach.

The implications are immediate and strategic. The rapid rise of Chinese manufacturers is reshaping competitive dynamics across Africa and narrowing the space for premium OEMs. africon’s analysis enabled the client to clearly identify high-risk regions, prioritize strategic markets, and define targeted responses. For international players, this shift underscores the urgency to rethink pricing structures, financing solutions, and localization strategies to remain competitive in Africa’s fast-evolving equipment market.
