Feature: africon and MECS develop a map on promising markets for Italian packaging technologies

Africa is increasingly positioning itself as a high-potential market for Italian packaging technologies. We developed a map with MECS (Manufacturing EConomic Studies) on promising markets for Italian packaging technologies. MECS is the research centre of the Confindustria-affiliated associations Acimac and Ucima and is a partner for Italian and international companies, providing them with customised information and reports. africon presented at Ucima’s headquarters in Modena during the conference “The African Market – How to benefit from the African potential.”

africon presents opportunities for Italian companies in Africa, at UCIMA headquarters in Modena

The map was also highlighted at the pacmedia web Magazine.

Some key takeaways from our presentation

  • Out of 54 African countries analysed, the research narrowed its focus to 20 major economies and identified six priority markets based on market potential, business environment, and operational risk.
  • South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria emerged as the most attractive markets, followed by Algeria, Morocco, and Côte d’Ivoire.
  • Rapid urbanization, industrial growth, and increased mechanization in food, beverage, and pharma production are driving demand for modern, efficient, and sustainable packaging solutions.
  • Between 2020 and 2024, Italy accounted for 28% of Africa’s packaging machinery imports, ranking first ahead of Germany and China.
  • Despite challenges such as currency volatility and regulatory complexity in some markets, regional integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is improving the long-term outlook and creating new opportunities for partnerships between African and European companies.

africon is proud to contribute to this dialogue and to support Italian companies in navigating African markets through data-driven insights and long-term partnership strategies.
