Presenting insights at the IAA MOBILITY Africa Day 2025
africon was invited to participate in the IAA MOBILITY Africa Day 2025, an event facilitating professional exchange between representatives of the African and European (German) automotive industries.
Hosted by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and the African Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM), the event brought together leaders to discuss industrialization, raw material processing, and market opportunities.

It was an opportunity to explore how Africa is positioning itself as a critical player in the global automotive and mobility ecosystem.
Highlights included
- Panels on North African markets. The focus was on the North African markets (Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt), as well as topics related to raw material processing. Moroccan and Tunisian delegations were present.
- Presentations and panel discussion with Ms. Martina Biene (Chairperson and Managing Director, Volkswagen Group Africa), Ms. Hildegard Müller (President, VDA), Mr. Habib Bouihi (Sector Expert Automotive, AHK Morocco / Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs & Energy) and Ms. Lamia Fourati (Vice President, Tunisian Automotive Association [TAA]), among other government, industry, and association leaders. See the program here.
- Our CEO, Marc-Peter Zander, presented on the topic, “Africa’s automotive markets: How many cars will be on Africa’s roads in 2050?”

Key takeaways and insights
- Today, Africa has approximately 55 million vehicles on the road. Africa’s vehicle parc is forecasted to grow by up to 214% (118 million) over the period 2025–2050.
- South Africa is the largest automotive market in Africa.
For africon, the discussions reinforced three central points:
- Africa is already a key market and not just a future one.
- Partnerships are essential, and international companies that collaborate early with African stakeholders will be best positioned to succeed.
- Local ecosystems matter from R&D to raw material processing and industrial policy.
We are proud to have contributed to this dialogue alongside other key stakeholders like the African Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM). africon remains committed to helping global players navigate and thrive in this exciting journey.
